It's amazing how magnetic dirt is. Ben (7 and 3/4), Genna (just 6) and Ceci (19 mo) were out in the backyard this evening--shovelling, pouring, moving, sitting in, dirt. For a while. What is it that draws them so regularly? Do they know it's what we were made of--that we're just dust that God breathed into and made alive? Is it in some ways us getting back to our roots--and since kids are closer in age to their beginning, they just feel the connection more? Or is it just that its cool--temperature-wise, and perhaps hip-wise--and fun to touch and feel--gritty meets smooth? Maybe the fact that we like to get dirty says something negative...but maybe it's nothing to worry about, because maybe we can celebrate that kids can find enjoyment in the simple things of the earth instead of insisting on gadgets and toys for entertainment.
